Throughout the history of the team the primary colors have been burgundy and gold. The uniform design in use today has been around since Coach Jack Pardee introduced it in 1979. This is a design which features gold, burgundy or white pants with either the burgundy or white jersey, with gold face masks on the helmets.
Considered the "classic" Redskins look, the white jersey over burgundy pants when playing home games became a tradition when Joe Gibbs took over in 1981.
The burgundy jersey is used mostly when the opposing team is wearing a white jersey which usually happens at the Redskins away games such as when they play the Dallas Cowboys at Cowboy Stadium.
Over the years the uniform of the Washington Redskins has evolved with changes to the logo and switching out the colors of the pants and jerseys, but the basic burgundy, gold and white always remains the basis of the Redskins playing uniform. There have even been occasions when the Redskins used white pants and burgundy and gold jerseys. There are variations that have occurred over the years including the NFL's 75th Anniversary season and the throwback uniforms of yesteryear that the Redskins donned, and an occasional white on white uniform that has been worn by the players for a few nationally televised games.
With a long and rich history including being one of the first teams to have a fight song, the Washington Redskins have developed a well known color scheme and uniform design that is easily recognizable to fans all over the country. Whether you spot a Deion Sanders jersey in the store or are flipping through the television channels on game day, that familiar burgundy and gold will let you know that you have found the Washington Redskins.
