Black and Gold Jersey
The Pittsburgh Steelers jersey, uniform and merchandise is easy to identify due their black and gold color scheme. Another identifying mark of the Steelers is their "Steelmark" logo which was designed by U.S. Steel. This logo contains the word "Steelers" surrounded by three asteroids which represent the ingredients used to make steel; yellow for coal, orange for iron ore and blue for scrap steel. Unique to the Pittsburgh Steelers is that fact that their logo is only on the right side of their black helmets, instead of on both sides.
Since 1968, the uniform design has consisted of gold pants with either black jerseys or white jerseys. The home jersey is black and the road jersey is white. The only variation of this was in 1970 and 1971 when the team wore white pants with the white jerseys. In 1997 the numbers on the jerseys were changed to a rounded font, and a Steelers logo was added to the left side of the jersey.
The alternate or "third" uniform that the Pittsburgh Steelers use is a black jersey with gold lettering, white pants featuring the black and gold stripes on each leg, and a gold helmet. This uniform was introduced to celebrate the Steelers 75 Anniversary season and evokes the memory of the 1960s uniforms. Being a popular uniform for the fans, the Steelers still use these "third" uniforms for home games.
Whether you have been a fan since the early days or are new to the "Steelers Nation" you probably recognize the familiar black and gold uniforms. Steelers' jerseys are sold in many sports stores so that fans can collect their favorite players' jersey. So the next time you are looking for Pittsburgh Steelers memorabilia try finding a black jersey to commemorate one of the late great football greats, or one of the members of the 2009 NFL Champion teammates like Kevin McCabe or Steve McClendon.
